Patriotic Shirts in Five Cotton Blanks
Patriotic shirts here cover five blanks: a lightweight Bella+Canvas 3001 tee, a garment-dyed Comfort Colors 1717 heavyweight tee, a 4.2 oz long-sleeve shirt, a cotton tank, and a pique polo. Every design is printed to order in the United States.

Five blanks, one print process
A patriotic shirt is mostly a fabric decision. The design is the same across the range, but the blank changes the weight, drape, opacity, and how the print feels against the skin. This page gathers every shirt-type product in the shop so you can compare them in one place.
The lightest options are the Bella+Canvas 3001 tee and the Bella+Canvas 3501 long-sleeve shirt, both 4.2 oz./yd.² (142 g/m²) combed and ring-spun cotton. The 3001 has side seams, shoulder-to-shoulder taping, and a pre-shrunk body. Heather colors contain polyester; solid colors are 100% cotton. The 3501 adds 2-inch ribbed cuffs and a cover-stitched collar, which makes it a useful layer in fall without the bulk of a sweatshirt.
The heaviest shirt is the Comfort Colors 1717 at 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²). It is garment-dyed, so the color has a slightly uneven, lived-in depth rather than the flat look of a piece-dyed tee. The fit is relaxed, the collar is a 7/8 inch double-needle topstitch, and the neck and shoulders are twill-taped. It is the best choice if you want a shirt that does not show through in White or Ivory.
The Bella+Canvas 3480 tank is the warm-weather option. It is 4.2 oz combed ring-spun cotton with wide armholes and a side-seamed body. The Gildan 64800 polo is the collared option: 5.2 oz ring-spun cotton pique, semi-fitted, with a three-button placket and a contoured welt collar. Polos are embroidered rather than printed.
What DTG printing means for the design
Direct-to-garment printing uses water-based ink sprayed into the fabric. On a 100% cotton shirt, the ink bonds with the fibres and leaves a soft hand. On heather or poly-blend colors, the print can sit slightly more on the surface because the polyester fibres do not absorb the same way. That is one reason we recommend solid colors for large, detailed graphics and heathers for simpler marks.
Because the ink is water-based, the print is not a plastic transfer. It will not peel like a vinyl heat transfer, but it can fade faster if you wash hot or dry on high heat. Turn the shirt inside out, use cold water, and tumble dry low. Skip fabric softener on the printed area and never iron directly on the graphic.
Sizing and fit across the range
The 3001 and 3501 are standard unisex cuts. The 1717 is relaxed, with more room through the chest and body. The 3480 tank is a unisex cut with a straight body. The 64800 polo is semi-fitted, so it sits closer to the body than the tees.
If you are ordering for a group, the 1717 is usually the easiest fit to size because the relaxed cut leaves room without looking oversized. If you are ordering for someone who prefers a trim fit, the 3001 or the polo is the better starting point. Our size guide lists the measured chest and body length for each blank.
Styling and gift notes
A heavyweight tee in Black, True Navy, or Granite is the most versatile gift. It works with jeans, shorts, and a jacket, and the darker colors hide the slight variation that garment dyeing produces. A white or ivory 1717 is a better choice for a summer event where you want the print to stand out.
For a lower-cost gift, add a sticker or a mug from the patriotic gifts collection. For a matching set, pair a shirt with an embroidered hat or a hoodie in the same design.
Frequently asked questions
Which patriotic shirt blank is best for hot weather?
The Bella+Canvas 3001 tee and the Bella+Canvas 3501 long-sleeve shirt are both 4.2 oz./yd.² (142 g/m²) combed ring-spun cotton, so they are the lightest options. The Bella+Canvas 3480 tank is also 4.2 oz and has wide armholes for summer wear.
What is the difference between the standard tee and the heavyweight tee?
The standard Bella+Canvas 3001 is a 4.2 oz tee with a soft, slightly stretchy hand and a side-seamed body. The Comfort Colors 1717 is 6.1 oz/yd², garment-dyed, and cut with a relaxed fit. It is thicker, more opaque in light colors, and has a broken-in feel.
Do the shirts run true to size?
Both tee blanks are unisex cut. The Bella+Canvas 3001 has a standard retail fit, while the Comfort Colors 1717 has a relaxed fit through the body. If you are between sizes and want a closer fit, choose the smaller size in the 1717; if you want a loose fit, size up.
How are the designs printed?
Shirts use direct-to-garment (DTG) printing, which sprays water-based ink into the cotton fibres. The print sits in the fabric rather than on top of it, so it stays soft. Long-sleeve shirts and tanks use the same process. Polos are embroidered on the left chest instead.
Will the print crack after washing?
Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold with similar colors, and tumble dry low. Avoid chlorine bleach and do not iron directly over the print. Following those steps keeps the ink flexible and prevents the most common causes of cracking, which are high dryer heat and ironing on the graphic.
Are these shirts good gifts for a patriotic dad or grandpa?
Yes. A heavyweight tee in True Navy, Black, or Granite is the safest gift because the color is forgiving and the relaxed cut suits most body types. If you know the recipient prefers a closer fit, choose the lighter 3001 tee instead.
