American Flag Clothing: Shirts, Hats, and Everyday Gear
American flag clothing covers a full 50-star print, a subdued tactical flag, a Betsy Ross 13-star circle, and distressed Americana artwork. This collection gathers every flag design across shirts, hoodies, embroidered hats, mugs, tumblers, stickers, magnets, and posters. The guide below explains the flag's history, the Flag Code, and how to choose a print or embroidery.
One flag, many ways to wear it
The American flag is a simple design with a long history: thirteen stripes for the original colonies and a star for each state. The Continental Congress set the first pattern on June 14, 1777, and the modern 50-star version became official on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii joined the union.
This collection is the broadest flag landing page in the shop. It includes the literal 50-star print, but it also includes designs that use the flag as a texture, a silhouette, or a historical reference. Shoppers want different things: a realistic flag tee, a subdued work cap, or a Betsy Ross circle for a 1776 display.
The flag designs in this collection
- Full 50-star flag. A complete flag with 13 stripes and 50 stars printed across the chest. This is the most literal design and the easiest to pair with jeans, shorts, or a plain jacket.
- Distressed vintage flag. The same flag proportions with a worn, faded texture for a broken-in look. It reads well on garment-dyed heavyweight tees and posters.
- Subdued tactical flag. A low-contrast flag in muted colors, designed for people who prefer a quieter mark than a bright red, white, and blue print.
- Betsy Ross 13-star flag. A circle of 13 stars on a blue field, tied to the founding era and often used for 1776 displays and history lessons.
- USA varsity arch. “United States of America” in collegiate block lettering with “Est. 1776” below, for a stadium or tailgate look.
- Vertical flag and Star-Spangled Banner layouts. Typographic designs that use the flag’s proportions or the anthem’s lyrics rather than a full flag image.
- Old Glory and “these colors never run.” Date-driven and phrase-driven designs for people who want a flag reference without a literal flag graphic.
- Home-of-the-free flag map. A map silhouette combined with “Home of the Free,” useful as a poster or a shirt for a classroom or workshop.
Shirts, hats, and drinkware in the flag range
Flag shirts use two cotton blanks. The Bella+Canvas 3001 is a 4.2 oz./yd.² (142 g/m²) combed ring-spun tee with side seams, shoulder-to-shoulder taping, and a pre-shrunk body. It is comfortable in heat but light enough that white and vintage-white colorways can be slightly sheer. The Comfort Colors 1717 is a 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²) garment-dyed heavyweight tee with a relaxed fit, a 7/8 inch double-needle collar, and twill-taped neck and shoulders. The Bella+Canvas 3719 hoodie is an 8.0 oz/yd² (271 g/m²) fleece pullover with a regular fit and a kangaroo pocket.
Flag hats are embroidered, not printed. The unstructured Yupoong 6245CM dad hat is 100% chino cotton twill with a 3 1/8 inch crown and an antique-buckle strap. The structured Yupoong 6606 trucker cap has hard buckram front panels, a mesh back, a 3.5 inch crown, and a plastic snapback. The rib-knit beanie is 100% turbo acrylic and hand washable.
Mugs are glossy white ceramic in 11 oz and 15 oz sizes. The 20 oz tumbler is double-wall stainless steel with a press-in lid. Stickers are 95-micron vinyl; magnets are 0.5 mm flexible vinyl. Posters are 10.3 mil matte paper at 189 g/m² and ship unframed.
A note on the Flag Code
Shoppers often ask whether a flag shirt conflicts with 4 U.S.C. § 8. The Code says the flag “should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery,” and it also says no part of the flag should be used as a costume or athletic uniform. Those provisions are advisory and are generally understood to protect an actual flag from being cut, sewn, or worn as a garment.
A shirt printed with a flag graphic is manufactured as clothing from the start. It is not a flag that has been converted into apparel. That distinction is why flag shirts, hats, and patches are widely sold and worn, including by veterans and patriotic organizations. Our US Flag Code guide explains the relevant sections in more detail.
Choosing a flag gift
For a first flag purchase, a full 50-star tee or a dad hat is the safest choice because the design is instantly recognisable. For someone who already owns several flag shirts, a subdued flag cap, a tumbler, or a poster is a more distinctive gift. If you are buying for a household rather than an individual, a mug and a sticker set travel well and avoid sizing questions.
Flag products also work as a set: a shirt and a cap in the same design, or a tee with a poster for a garage or classroom. The American flag shirts and American flag hats pages narrow the range if you already know which blank you want.
Frequently asked questions
When was the American flag adopted?
The Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution on June 14, 1777, specifying thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, and thirteen white stars on a blue field. The current 50-star flag became official on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became a state.
Is it legal to wear American flag clothing?
Yes. The Flag Code in 4 U.S.C. § 8 says the flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery, but that advisory language is generally read as protecting an actual physical flag from being cut up or worn. A manufactured shirt printed with a flag graphic was never a flag.
What flag designs are in this collection?
The collection includes a full 50-star, 13-stripe flag print, a subdued tactical flag, a Betsy Ross 13-star circle, a distressed vintage flag, a USA varsity arch, a vertical flag layout, a Star-Spangled Banner lyric design, an Old Glory date design, a "these colors never run" layout, and a flag-map design.
What is the difference between the American flag shirts and American flag hats pages?
This page gathers every flag design across all product types. The shirts page focuses on tees and hoodies, while the hats page focuses on embroidered dad hats, trucker caps, and beanies. Use this page when you want to browse the whole flag range.
Which flag shirt is best for summer?
The Bella+Canvas 3001 tee is the lightest option at 4.2 oz./yd.² (142 g/m²), with a soft combed ring-spun cotton hand. For a heavier shirt that shows less through lighter colors, choose the 6.1 oz/yd² Comfort Colors 1717 heavyweight tee.
How should I care for a printed or embroidered flag item?
Wash printed shirts and hoodies inside out in cold water and tumble dry low. Do not iron directly over the flag print. Spot clean embroidered caps or hand wash beanies, then air dry. Mugs and tumblers are dishwasher safe; keep posters out of damp rooms and direct sun.
